Ventral Slot Surgery for Pets

One of the specialized procedures we offer is ventral slot surgery, most commonly used to treat certain neck (cervical) spinal cord problems caused by intervertebral disc disease or wobbler syndrome. These conditions can cause pain, weakness, or even difficulty walking.

What Is Ventral Slot Surgery?

In simple terms, a ventral slot is a way for our surgeons to gently access the spinal cord from the underside of the neck. This allows us to remove damaged disc material that is pressing on the spinal cord or nerves—relieving pain and preventing further nerve injury.

This procedure is not usually used for spinal tumors, as it provides a more limited view inside the spinal canal.

Why Your Pet Might Need This Surgery

We may recommend a ventral slot procedure if:

• Your pet has persistent or worsening neck pain.

• They show weakness, wobbliness, or stumbling in their legs.

• Imaging (MRI or CT scan) shows that a disc is protruding or herniated into the spinal canal.

Without surgery, these conditions can get worse, sometimes leading to paralysis.

How the Surgery Works

• Preparation: Before surgery, your pet will have bloodwork, advanced imaging, and a full health check to ensure they’re ready for anesthesia.

• Access: The surgeon makes a small incision on the underside of the neck, carefully moving aside important structures like the windpipe and blood vessels.
• 
  
• Creating the “Slot”: A very small section of bone is removed to create a “window” into the spinal canal. This allows the surgeon to see and gently remove the material pressing on the spinal cord.

• Closure: Once decompression is complete, the tissues are carefully put back in place, and the incision is closed.

Throughout the procedure, our team uses magnification, advanced lighting, and specialized tools to ensure safety and precision.

Recovery & Aftercare

Most pets stay in our ICU for monitoring after surgery. Pain is controlled with a multimodal plan to keep your pet comfortable. At home, your pet will need strict rest for several weeks—usually in a crate or small room—to allow healing. We’ll also guide you on gentle rehabilitation exercises when the time is right.

Using a body harness instead of a collar will be important for the long term to avoid pressure on the neck.

Possible Risks

As with any surgery, there are risks such as bleeding, infection, or instability of the spine. However, our experienced team takes every precaution to keep these risks as low as possible.
