In unborn puppies and kittens, the ductus arteriosus is a normal vessel that connects the aorta to the pulmonary artery, helping blood bypass the lungs before birth. Normally, this vessel closes naturally once the newborn starts breathing.

When it doesn’t close, the result is a PDA. This abnormal vessel allows blood to flow backward from the aorta into the pulmonary artery. Over time, this overloads the lungs and puts dangerous strain on the left side of the heart.

What is PDA Occlusion?
